As I absorb the information, the door to the room opens. Four young women enter carrying trays of what looks to me like elaborate teapots. “Ah, yes,” Zena says before Kris can elaborate. “Please, let us take a moment and enjoy a cup of gahwa.” Because I know this is a part of Zena’s culture to offer her guests food and drink, I do not mind the interruption. I actually welcome the moment of distraction while I puzzle through who wants to kill me. If not Georgia DeLane, then I have no immediate idea.

As one of the elegant servants draws closer and places something before me, I see bowls of dates for us to enjoy. Watching her, she pours me a cup of Arabian coffee with practiced precision. Accepting the delicate offering of sweet-smelling drink, I smile my thanks. The woman returns it, and I cannot help but note her dark-eyed beauty. Not too long ago, I would have made a mental note to find her after the meeting. I have interacted with enough women to know a twinkle of interest in the eye of one. Yet, I feel nothing toward her but a simple appreciation of her beauty and skill. This catches me a little by surprise as I consider just how consumed by Hope I am. Even after only the first few days in her presence, no one else could compare. Her beauty. Her fire. She is everything I could ever want.

Suddenly, I hear someone tapping on the table, and I am brought from my reverie of Hope naked beneath me last night. It is Val, and she doesn’t look happy over my distractions. “Hello? Chloe, are you paying attention? This concerns you a little,” she says, her voice laced with sarcasm. I look around and notice the others are also looking at me, and all I can do is shrug while giving them a sheepish smile.

“My apologies. My mind was elsewhere,” I admit, and Madison chuckles.

“I’m sure it most definitely was,” she says, lightening the moment, and I appreciate her coming to my rescue even though it earns her a glare from Val. Clearly having had enough of the daggers, Madison returns the look. “I think your disapproval of our actions has been duly noted, Val. Let me remind you, you are not perfect.”

I watch as Val opens her mouth to shoot back a retort, but Zena raises her hand. “Enough,” she says. “We don’t have time for disagreements among us. The real threat is external.”

“But we know it wasn’t Georgia DeLane,” Juana says from beside me. “She has been ruled out because of her proximity. Surely, she would not risk blowing herself up.”

“Oh, that’s for sure,” Madison says. “There’s not a woman more focused on self-preservation than her. This attack isn’t related to her wanting to be in our old club.”

“No,” Zena agrees. “I can’t help but wonder if it was not directed at Chloe specifically and has nothing to do with the rest of us.” She turns her eyes on me.
